Selling Your Home This Summer? Tips to Prepare Your Deck

Staging and Renovating the Deck for Home SellingAttractive decks that have been well maintained can be an asset when selling a home, as they have a good chance to appeal to buyers. By staging your deck and staging other parts of the home, sellers can significantly improve time on the market and selling price. Before putting your home on the market, repairing and decorating your deck will make your home more attractive to buyers.

Sweep, Clean and Refinish

The first step is to clean and update your Lorton deck to give it a fresh look. To clean your deck, sweep with an outdoor brush. Scrub the wood with a combination of bleach and water to remove mildew and mold. To find out if your stained deck needs to be refinished, spray the deck with water. If the wood absorbs the water, it's time to refinish. To refinish the deck, clean the wood with a pressure washer, then sand down any splintered areas. Finally, paint the deck with two coats of stain. Allow the stain to cure for the manufacturer's recommended length of time before putting the furniture back on the deck.

Establish Privacy

Put up a wall along sides of the deck that face the neighbors. This will make your deck feel more private and enclosed. If done properly, a wall will also make your deck more attractive. One way this can be done is to put up a row of tall plants or potted trees along each side of the deck.

Growing vining plants along the sides of the deck is another way to shield the deck from the neighbors. However, this must be done months in advance of selling the house to ensure that the plants will have time to grow. To do this, install latticework along the sides of the deck, then plant fast-growing annuals (like morning glories) along the base of the deck. Train the plants to grow up along the lattice, and water the plants regularly to ensure fast growth.

Clean and Repair the Furniture

Clean your deck's furniture with a natural cleaning agent like vinegar and water. Scrub the furniture with a soft microfiber cloth or a sponge. If the furniture is old, a fresh coat of spray paint can help make your deck look new.

Consult With Your Real Estate Agent

An attractive deck can be a valuable asset when it's time to sell. Your real estate agent can help you decide what needs to be done to your deck before your house goes on the market. Several months before putting your home up for sale, consult with your real estate agent about projects that will help make your deck more attractive.
