With the weather we have been having, it is hard to imagine the Cherry Blossom Festival has started. Dates for the 2013 National Cherry Blossom Festival are March 20 thru April14. The National Park Service has pushed back the peak blooming period from March 26-30 to now be April 3-6. The Festival Parade will be April 13, 2013. The 2013 Cherry Blossom Festival marks the 101st anniversary of the gift of the trees from Japan. Check the festival website for more information.
The Peak Bloom Date is defined as the day on which 70 percent of the blossoms of the Yoshino cherry trees that surround the Tidal Basin are open. This date varies from year to year, depending on weather conditions. The Blooming Period is defined as that period when 20 percent of the blossoms are open until the petals fall and leaves appear. Go to the National Park Service website for more details.
